The Royal Marines Commandos are the UK Armed Forces’ experts at fighting in extreme environments. From the deserts of Afghanistan to the Jungles of Belize - they have operated in every corner of the world. However, no environment is more challenging than the frozen Mountains and fjords of Northern Norway. A deployment there is seen as a rite of passage in the Royal Marines; the making of a Bootneck.
Sub Zero Rescue (14:19)
Marines from the USA, UK and the Icelandic Coastguard work together to test their capability to rescue fallen pilots in arctic temperatures.

It is a club that deals with a variety of disciplines, from indoor climbing in the gym to bouldering on short problems without ropes, or even getting the ice axes and crampons out to go on an alpine adventure.
Turkish Mine (3:56)
To counter the serious threat of sea mines, NATO keeps two Mine Countermeasures Groups– one based in the Baltic Sea, the other in the Mediterranean - on standby at all times. The Turkish mine hunter, TCG Akçay, recently conducted a counter-mine exercise, ensuring its readiness to handle all taskings.

Like war and conflict, extreme weather events pose a serious threat to millions of people around the world. It’s only recently that we’re seeing global leaders begin to take the threat of global warming, more commonly referred to as climate change, seriously. The calls for their militaries to provide humanitarian aid to those affected by disaster grow louder.
