The History of Hypnosis – In the beginning

The History of Hypnosis has a long and colorful past, Hypnosis originally has its roots in Hindu yoga meditation and ancient far Eastern spiritual and meditation practices. The Western World has only taken notice of the potential benefits of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy since the 1800′s, in scientific fashion, by observing the parts that can be measured and recorded, then creating system for inducing hypnotic trances and states derived largely from these ancient practices.

The History of Hypnosis – Developing in the West

After this point the History of Hypnosis became a more Westernized affair, some people say that Franz Anton Mezmer was the father (indirectly) of modern hypnotism and hypnotherapy, others say that when he Mezmerised his subjects and therefore was not hypnotising or putting them into a hypnotic state at all. In 1843 James Braid, a Scottish Surgeon proposed that Mezmer who claimed to channeling the forces of the Occult and using ‘animal magnetism’ to control his subjects was in fact using naturally occurring hypnotic effects. The two came into conflict and reports from the British Medical Association drew a line between Mezmerism and Hypnosis, so ‘modern hypnosis’ was born, leading to the field of ‘Hypnotherapy’.

History Of HypnosisHistory of Hypnosis – Milton Eriksson

A large portion of modern history of Hypnosis is derived at least indirectly from the work of Milton Eriksson who is considered to be one of the greatest hypnotherapists of modern times. His work with metaphor and story telling more closely resembled the methods of ancient Eastern practices, and while it still has some way to go to be as ‘clinically proven’ as simpler methods which are more easily measurable,  large parts of NLP (neuro linguistic therapy) are based on the work of Eriksson. Since the work of Milton Eriksson, hypnotherapy for many different issues such as stress, phobias, IBS, depression and many others has gained ground and been studied at length by the established medical institutions, who have been supportive of the sensible claims for what Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy can achieve.

History of Hypnosis – The Future

With lifestyle, diet, self discipline issues with mental health becoming more of a concern for modern individuals, Hypnotherapy is offering a more and more effective route into managing problems that may in the past have been (appropriately or not) dealt with by the use of powerful medication. The history of hypnosis will no doubt recognize it’s growing role in helping us to be mentally healthy without powerful drugs.
